SUMMARY:The science of strings and soundboards / Murray Campbell
DESCRIPTION:The science of strings and soundboards / Murray Campbell Musical instruments based on the vibrations of strings have been essential elements in music making for many millennia. A stretched string of constant thickness has some very special properties which allow it to produce a clearly pitched note. Yet a vibrating string is a very poor radiator of sound\, so almost all practicable stringed instruments include some form of soundboard which receives the string vibrations and converts them efficiently into sound waves. This workshop explores the behaviour of strings and soundboards on a variety of stringed instruments\, using scientific techniques including frequency spectrum analysis and Chladni pattern visualisation. Meeting the tutor.
